BioBackHaus returnable management: AI counting, container management software and GPS for delivery operations

In day-to-day operations, the value of returnables could hardly be separated from the delivered goods themselves - alongside growing shrinkage and a higher financial impact from thermal containers. BioBackHaus needed reliable data and relief for drivers; PixelEdge provides mobile AI counting, container management software with track and trace and analytics, plus GPS. Pain points - and why BioBackHaus needed a solution

BioBackHaus supplies a large network of its own organic bakery shops and partner locations across Berlin and Brandenburg with organic baked goods every day (das-biobackhaus.de). At the same time, large volumes of reusable assets and returnables circulate through the operation - bakery crates, thermal boxes, roll cages, pallets and other load carriers are economically just as relevant as the delivery of fresh products.

With high returnable circulation, the operational value of empty assets was economically in the same order of magnitude as the value of delivered goods - a typical tension in intensive bakery logistics. Shrinkage and inaccuracies became relevant for both accounting and processes and could no longer be pushed into the background.

Thermal containers as the tipping point: With the introduction of the PPWR (EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation), BioBackHaus had to move away from polystyrene boxes; reusable thermal containers became much more important. As their use increased, pressure rose as well: high replacement value, expensive losses and misallocations, and less tolerance for gaps in traceability.

Specific challenges included:

Growing shrinkage & reconciliation Discussions with partners and stores - without a reliable, consistent data basis.
Manual counting and paper Time-consuming and error-prone at many stops - not scalable across more than 200 points of sale and over ten returnable types.
Driver workflow Customers and routes often had to be assigned manually - friction at every stop and a risk of incorrect postings.
Controlling & pool management Without an end-to-end digital chain, transparency over inventories, movements and responsibilities was missing.

Against this background, BioBackHaus specifically looked for an end-to-end digital solution - fast to implement, suitable for many container types and locations, relieving delivery teams and providing container management software with analytics instead of isolated Excel sheets and paper notes.

Solution: mobile AI counting, container management software and GPS

The requirement: less shrinkage and more clarity at the gate with less effort - without months of rollout. The implemented setup combines mobile AI counting (photo instead of clipboard), container management software with track and trace for movements and central analytics, and GPS-supported assignment. Drivers no longer need to select customers and stops manually; counting and movement data is linked more reliably in the system.

Only two weeks passed between first contact and go-live - a pragmatic approach that helped BioBackHaus move quickly beyond estimates and paper and start working with reliable figures.

Implemented solution and benefits

More than 10 returnable types implemented Including bakery crates, thermal containers, roll cages/dollies and H1 pallets - captured and mapped in one continuous system.
No confusion between different deposit values Clear assignment by container type and process - fewer discussions and posting errors when deposit logic changes.
More than 200 points of sale connected Scaling across the company's own network and partners - one central data basis instead of scattered notes and Excel silos.
Fast rollout From first contact to productive use in just a few weeks - reliable figures instead of a long planning phase.
Mobile AI counting at the stop Photo instead of clipboard - quantities captured directly and traceably without paper lists at every gate.
GPS and less manual assignment Customers and routes are linked more reliably in the system - less friction per stop and a lower risk of incorrect postings.
Central container management software Track and trace, analytics and transparency in the returnable pool - everything in one place instead of isolated solutions.
End-to-end digital chain From counting to controlling: traceable movements, inventories and responsibilities.

Technology in detail: Mobile AI counting for crates and containers in logistics · Container management software: track and trace for load carriers and returnables

"The value of our returnables is comparable to that of our deliveries - we no longer wanted to rely on estimates for shrinkage and thermal containers. With mobile AI counting, container management software and GPS, we became productive in a short time and relieved our delivery operations, while all locations are consolidated in one analysis."

Mobile AI counting where returnables arise

For BioBackHaus returnable management, capture is digitized directly in the delivery process: instead of clipboard and estimates, photos and AI provide reliable quantities - even with mixed stacks or when not every container can be read by barcode. Returnables can be counted via app without scanning every crate individually.

Typical returns such as bakery crates, thermal boxes, roll cages and pallets run through one shared workflow; image-based documentation supports reconciliation and control.

As a central track-and-trace platform, the container management software bundles count and movement data from many points of sale into one view. Dispatching and controlling gain reliable figures instead of Excel fragments - the basis for spotting shrinkage early and managing the returnable pool.

GPS-supported assignment complements mobile capture: customers and stops no longer have to be assigned manually.
