Edge.Count NextGen: funding for a wider range of load carriers

Edge.Count already counts returnables, crates and pallets from a photo. This research project shortens the path to further load carriers, including through synthetic data generation. The European Union and the State of Lower Saxony co-fund the project.

Project

The project

Edge.Count NextGen is our research project to advance AI-based counting methods. The focus is how quickly further load carriers can be added to the counting that is already in use.

The Edge.Count crate counting app already captures returnables and load carriers from a photo in the process. NextGen works on making the next carrier type ready in less time.

Variety

More load carriers, faster

Edge.Count already covers a wide range, including IFCO and EPS crates, KLTs, E1 and E2 crates, beverage crates, bakery crates and pallets. Mixed stacking patterns are included. Stacks do not have to be single-type.

Each additional carrier type still needs its own images from the real process. Synthetic data generation adds to that base: realistic counting scenes with different stacks, viewpoints and lighting are created before a large photo shoot at the dock is required. That makes it faster to add new load carriers, so variety grows in shorter steps in digital returnable management and in container management software.

Co-funding

Who supports the project

This project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the State of Lower Saxony. The granting body is Investitions- und Förderbank Niedersachsen – NBank.

In use

In daily use

In day-to-day operations, Edge.Count remains the returnable counting app. The faster paths to new load carriers are intended to flow into this solution later.

In short

Common questions

What is Edge.Count NextGen?

Edge.Count NextGen is a research project that speeds up adding further load carriers to AI counting. Synthetic data generation is one part of that work. Day-to-day counting stays with Edge.Count.

Which load carriers can AI already count?

Edge.Count already counts many types, including IFCO and EPS crates, KLTs, E1 and E2 crates, beverage crates, bakery crates and pallets. For carriers that are still missing, NextGen shortens the path into the counting app.

How does synthetic data generation help when counting crates?

It creates realistic counting scenes for new carrier types, stacks and viewpoints. Fewer real photo campaigns are then needed before another load carrier can be added to Edge.Count.

Who funds the project?

The project is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the State of Lower Saxony. The granting body is NBank.

Is Edge.Count NextGen already a counting app?

It is a research project. Teams count crates, returnables and pallets today with the Edge.Count app.

See counting in your own process

Edge.Count is the counting app for day-to-day use. When another load carrier should be added, we start with a typical stack from your process.

For day-to-day use, Edge.Count remains the solution: take a photo, count, and pass the result into inventory.
